The New Year is just around the corner and how many of you are planning your new goals and setting higher standards for your life? One of my goals this past year was to find a personal trainer who could help me develop my fitness level and teach me how to strengthen my body. I have always been thin but I have never had muscles…. until now. Hiring a personal trainer was the best investment I could have made for myself this year. As creatures of habit, you create your lives through patterns of thoughts, emotions, and actions and sometimes these patterns create sedentary lifestyles and lack of progress with your fitness goals. My thought patterns were that I could prepare for 3 half-marathons, not intake as many calories as I needed to build muscle, which in turn wreaked havoc on my body. We are not all built the same and I needed a trainer who did not have a one-size-fits-all mentality. With several weeks of prayer, my trainer entered my life and has taught me how to individually built muscle and strengthen my body.
I used to be intimidated to walk into a gym, because I had no idea how to create the fitness level I wanted to achieve. Once I realized that I needed to push beyond the fear, I managed to begin learning new ways of thinking that eventually led to creating new lifestyle changes. For one, although I am thin I cannot duplicate what another person does in the gym… especially someone who is not built with my specific body type. I also needed to understand that gaining muscles came from lifting weights and not just running. Whoever said that ignorance is bliss truly had no idea what they were talking about. Knowledge is power and every day you make a choice to gain knowledge to reach new fitness goals or you choose to repeat the same patterns of thinking that got you to the fitness level you are today without progress. Either way… it is a choice.
Each day that I walked into the gym was a new day I gained power over my fear. I started with the lightest weights, listened to the snarky comments that came from some of the other members as to why I was working out so hard, and pushed through the pain my body experienced the next day. Despite pushing myself beyond what I was capable of the day before, I never believed that my body could not do what my trainer was teaching me to do. There were no excuses coming from my vocabulary because the moment I created an excuse was the moment I chose to fail… and I was NOT going to fail at this goal. Being in the gym 5-6 times a week was teaching my mind, body, and soul a new way of thinking and creating and finally after months of daily workouts, I discovered a muscle!!! To say I was excited was an understatement. Suddenly my fear turned into empowerment and this fed my body and mind more fuel to push myself beyond what I could do the week before. When people say that fitness is an individual goal, this is what they mean. You are creating a new fitness level higher than you had the week before – you are NOT competing with anyone else but yourself. This can be one of the most rewarding and empowering journey’s you can take because the only person you are trying to be better than is the person you were yesterday.
Although I am only halfway to my fitness goal, I am dedicated to achieving this as long as it takes. Every day that you draw breath is a new day to reach a new goal and create a loftier dream. What dream are you creating? Never use an excuse to fail or you are undermining the ability your mind, body, and soul have to create miracles in your own life. Take today as your new challenge and begin now. Start with squats in your bedroom or take a walk instead of getting on your computer. You don’t need to wait until January 1st… today is the first day of the rest of your life!
